Actual business
Refactoring of OSM website notes
Grekko had developed a pull request already, but the work got shelved on 7 Oct 2024 after a conversation between Andy Allan and Grekko. Now a different implementation for the notes feature by some so far unseen contributor has got far enough for Grekko to abandon work on the feature.
As the Engineering Working Group is interested in the functionality and not a particular implementation, it is decided to wait for now and to ping Grekko every now and then until the feature is merged or merge-ready.
EWG help with recruitment for copyright page update
Robert has volunteered in previous meetings to partner with Emerson on this.
The bid should be published on GitHub using the same presentation and folder structure as with previous calls for bids. Emerson volunteers to do that, but wants to wait for next meeting and involve Robert.
It is decided to document the process properly and to ask Gregory for an idea of the necessary time and budget. The EWG wants to follow proper process here to get routine in that, even if it might be over-sophisticated here.
Please note that bid will need to be communicated by the Communications Working Group as part of the process.
Sovereign Tech Fund (STF)
The call for applications has been successful. The Foundation received 15 applications, of which 4 passed screening against the requirements. The committee is now in the process of inviting candidates to the interviews. There will be several steps in the interview process. The Foundation is more or less on schedule with regard to the expectations of the funding STF, but want to move fast anyway.
Roland and Hector volunteer to support Adam for the EWG managed interviews.
GDPR
See last minutes for context.
The next steps are still: - Improve the draft on the GitHub repo - Look also through the code whether there are obviously loose ends - Shall it be split into multiple pull requests?
Roland still volunteers to sort out with Andrew what to do.
Vector Tiles
The usage Policy is approved and ready to merge.
iD Development
Martin held a chat; there are some developments towards a larger team forming around the project. Some pull requests are coming in in anticipation of Google Summer of Code.
Google Summer of Code
See here. Applications for mentoring organizations will open on January 27.
The OpenStreetMap org admin team running the 2024 Google Summer of Code participation is prepared to submit OpenStreetMap's application as organization for 2025. Also reaching out to potential org admins among mentors from past rounds.
Any other business
Bing Maps
It appears some editors are using older Bing Maps tokens which do not have the same access level. In response to this situation, Mikel is currently coordinating potential actions between editor developers and Bing.
Ideally, Microsoft can coordinate with the Foundation and the community then coordinates among themselves. Martin (iD) might be in a good position to do some coordination.
A recent key failure in JOSM is unrelated to the sunsetting.
Advisory Board Meeting
The meeting takes place on Monday 2025-01-27 16 UTC. Microsoft is presenting there.
Budget
Moved to next time.
Sponsoring Opportunity
A company has asked whether it is possible to sponsor the development of specific features they are interested in, without telling which ones. Roland shall answer the request: the EWG sees itself as the responsible body for that, but rather to make contact with developers that may or may not be able to perform the work. The "talent pool" of the British local chapter is mentioned.
