GPS trace visibility change

[Topic added by Minh, due to Tom's message on the PR about the need to figure the messaging and the timing for the deployment.]

GPS trace visibility change is ready but questions about if/when to deploy

Communication plan: <link redacted>.

Affected applications

Minh and Rubén created a list of GitHub repositories mentioning these keywords, but many of them were abandoned.

Affected applications include OSMTracker on Android, OSM-NG, and others that use deprecated status types. The applications checked by Minh did not seem to default to one of the deprecated types. OSMTracker is typically fixing bugs within a month.

Engagement with the community

The change was mentioned on the weekly recap by Pablo, 1–2 months ago. This resulted in a few comments to the issue.

Uploading a trace type that is no longer supported

This will error out. Some apps might recover.

Suggestions

  • Grant to make a post on c.osm.org and Mastodon before the change. If posted today, it might be mentioned by weeklyOSM.
  • Term the change positively as a simplification and an improvement in privacy.

Action item

Minh to mention again the GPS trace visibility change in the weekly recap, outlining the privacy implications.

CGImap maintenance

Woazboat is concerned about mmd's absence, as a pull request submitted by them was not reviewed for an extended period (around 6 months). Ask Matt to migrate the CGImap repo https://github.com/zerebubuth/openstreetmap-CGImap to OSM org: https://github.com/zerebubuth/openstreetmap-CGImap/issues/160

Matt Amos (repository owner) is still available and happy to be engaged, despite reduced activity. He has attended OSM London events.

Maintenance

mmd is the de facto repository maintainer for some time. He did an experiment with an OAuth extension for MediaWiki. Also, a similar experiment connecting OSM and OHM, which OHM has been running for some time and is working perfectly.

Minh reached out to mmd but has not heard back. Sarah has heard from mmd recently and he is busy with life.

Issues needing immediate address

Suggestions

  • Grant and Tom to approach Matt directly.

Other points mentioned during discussion

Matt has previously refused requests to move the repository to the OSM org.

Action items

  • Minh to follow up with mmd.
  • Grant and Minh to discuss the MediaWiki OAuth extension work.

GPX uploads fail with 503

Related to https://github.com/openstreetmap/operations/issues/1378.

Issue: GPS trace uploads are failing for users on slow connections. Ruben tried to upload a 1.5 MB GPX file and it timed out. Multiple users in the forum have reported the same issue.

The problem is probably related to Fastly, rather than in the Apache configuration, as no timeout errors are visible on the server side. Apache has an overall two-minute time limit, but it is not clear whether this is the cause.

Action item

Grant to look into the Fastly timeout settings (connection timeout, first-byte timeout, and between-bytes timeout) and attempt to reproduce the GPX time-out issue using developer tools.

MediaWiki upgrade

The MediaWiki installation needs to be upgraded from version 43.9 to the new LTS release, 46.0. The upgrade is a two-step process: first an OS upgrade, then the MediaWiki upgrade. The OS upgrade does not appear to break the current MediaWiki installation, based on tests conducted on the test wiki. The new MediaWiki version is available, but point releases are not yet available.

Current work

Grant has synced all the bundled extensions. One extension has been moved into the core MediaWiki package and required special handling - it has already been added to Chef.

Suggestions

  • Minh to nudge Yuri.
  • Upgrade the board wiki first, after the test.

REST API

  • There is ongoing breakage around Wikibase related to the REST API, which is being phased out, so it might not matter.
  • The MediaWiki REST API is in flux.
  • There are two separate REST APIs in MediaWiki (old and new).

Other points mentioned during discussion

  • The main extensions being tested on the test wiki are the Translate and the Wikibase extensions, which have a cluster of issues.
  • Tom was previously testing the upgrades on the board and DWG wikis, as they don't have as many extensions.

Action items

  • Grant to proceed with the MediaWiki upgrade on the test wiki in the next few days.
  • Minh to do cursory testing of extensions on the test wiki, once it is upgraded.
