On suggestion to switch sites
- Rejected, as it might be too risky and a hard fail in Postgres.
- There are some remaining barriers for easily switching, including how to easily move the diff generation.
- Currently there is no simple way to migrate the primary DB server. It is a painful process, documented on the OPS wiki.
Other points mentioned during discussion
- Concern on the breaker flipping on the other power feed (32 amps on the breaker, we're using 12).
- We aren't going to have the inrush from hard drive spin up since they're not going to be spinning up, or from the capacitors, because they're already connected.
- One of our power supplies on HP machine runs at 5 watts, but caps are fully charged.
- If the break is due to us, it might take them longer to fix it.
- Grant happy to do a test.
Action item: Grant Slater to post the maintenance outage notice.
Equinix
- We have to proceed assuming we won't get sponsorship by Equinix.
- We asked them for a discounted price on power and they are giving us an extra kilowatt for a slightly lower price.
- We do not have many options available.
- We have contacted the Equinix foundation and if we provide some details that they asked for, they might have a look at them.
Suggestion: Send to the Equinix Foundation the details they asked for.
Action item: Grant to reply to Equinix, to accept their offer.
Any other business
Vector Tiles
- Paul to look at deployment for Vector Tiles relatively soon, as parallelism tasks are turning out to be quite easy. Also plans to revisit earlier work at a later point, as fixes will be easier to do.
- Paul would like to do it with Docker. DB to be run out of the container.
- As Podman adds networking latency, it might not be preferable.
- Grant happy to help with containers.
Suggestions on getting the Chef tests running:
- Write a test and execute it using chef.
- Follow documentation for running chef tests, including installing Docker and Ruby.
- Use existing code as a template if needed.
- Set up a container for tests. This container functions like a virtual machine, allowing effective interaction.
