DWG activity report for Q4, 2022
Statistics
537 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (150 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 789 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1047 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
119 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 38 were discarded as spam. 366 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 77 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 5 hours.
13 DWG members were active in the quarter (90% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (382), but we also used the languages Dutch (14), French (9), Spanish (9), German (8), and Russian (7). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
Fictional names in Southern California
We occasionally get issues where a mapper wants to change names of things like mountains and roads to match their own name, their friends' names, or just "what they would like the thing to be called". We've had an interesting ongoing issue that started in this quarter in Southern California. Initially the mapper used a couple of accounts with recognisably similar names to do this. They ignored comments from other mappers and refused to provide a source of their information. The DWG tried to engage with them too, and then tried short block messages, to no avail. The mapper next tried to get their edits to "stick" by contacting Mapbox and informing them of an "error" in OSM. This worked initially, but we have since contacted both Mapbox mappers involved and hopefully this problem won't reoccur.

This is another long-running issue - a mapper has been trying to create a "beautiful" map of the theme park by mistagging lots of features within it, and doing things that broke routing like removing linear ways. Whilst the result did look very nice, it didn't actually do a very good job of representing what was there.
Concerted reports of one mapper
This quarter saw a ticket with perhaps the most issue reports against one mapper that the DWG has ever seen. Many of these reports were duplicate ones from the same mappers, but many different accounts were involved. We checked all the reports, and all were invalid.
In general, the DWG takes a very dim view of "revenge reports". Accusing other mappers of misbehaviour in bad faith will get the reporter in trouble, not the reported.
