DWG activity report for Q4, 2021
Statistics
390 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (92 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 854 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1076 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
37 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 59 were discarded as spam. 253 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 142 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 12 hours.
15 DWG members were active in the quarter (88% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (316), but we also used the languages Dutch (25), Spanish (17), German (13), Russian (11), and Danish (5). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
Etiquette issues (again)
Following on from https://dwg.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Activity_Reports_Pre-Publication/Q4_2021#Comment_and_Notable_Issues we had more of these this quarter too. One example was a mapper who simply wasn't treating those that they were engaging with in OSM with basic respect ("assume good faith") etc.
Organised retail mapping in the USA
This is something of a recurring issue - amembers of a team making "contributions" to US retail that often start with deleting all previous edits in an area by previous members of that team and others, and then re-adding the same or different points (with no source information). Our attempts to communicate with these mappers have been mostly unsuccessful. In several cases we've had to revert because (a) previous data (including from survey) was lost and (b) we have literally no idea what the source, licence, or accuracy of the data was.
Poor quality "AI" edits in mountainous areas of Ukraine
The DWG received complaints from hikers and other users of OSM, particularly in the Carpathian Mountains in the southwest, that OSM's map contained things mapped as roads that simply were not even tracks. Some were gaps in the forest created temporarily by logging vehicles; some were actually streams. The problem was that one particular mapper was taking "MapWithAI" suggestions based on old, poor-quality imagery too literally and not spending the time to analyse what they were actually looking at. The mapper was actually part of an organised editing team, and the resolution here involved asking that company to help with the clean-up - a significant quantity of data was affected and we wanted to "map it properly" not "revert everything".
Poor quality tasks.hotosm.org descriptions
The problem here that new mappers were asked by a task on tasks.hotosm.org to use a particular changeset comment, which unfortunately contained only hashtags there was no other information such as "mapping $infrastructure in $place using $source" or similar. Numerous attempts to get this changed met with no response.
Golf course mapping
It appears that a popular golf simulator game uses OSM data, and even gives users the option to export data from OSM and load it into the game. This has led to a number of golf-related contributions in OSM which would normally be welcome, however due to misleading instructions by various enthusiasts online, these mappers have often been driving to mis-map things for the game, frequently transforming all highway=* objects in and around the golf course to cart paths. Not being interested in OSM other than as a data source for their game, these users often lack the responsibility we expect from our mappers. This has necessitated numerous discussions, reverts, and user blocks, and a wiki page has been set up here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Problematic_mapping/golf
