IRC Log
21:03 toffehoff Hello again
21:03 toffehoff rweait1 not here?
21:04 toffehoff Looking at last weeks log, Harry is probably not going to make it today.
21:05 toffehoff So, we're here with JonathanB and RichardF as active participants?
21:05 JonathanB Yep
21:05 toffehoff Let's kick of with last weeks minutes: http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/CWG_meeting_2012-01-09
21:06 rweait Hi sorry to be late.
21:06 toffehoff Hello Richard.
21:06 RichardF last week - I sent apologies of sorts via IRC I think, but not really fussed about recording that
21:07 toffehoff just send the link to last weeks minutes around.
21:08 toffehoff RichardF, apologies added.
21:08 RichardF thank you!
21:08 toffehoff scanning over the minutes, have we actually accepted the one from 2 weeks ago?
21:09 JonathanB Don't think we were in a position to -- I was absent from the meeting, so couldn't say they were accurate
21:09 toffehoff I'm happy to propose last weeks minutes.
21:10 rweait Sorry, folks, I have to run.
21:10 toffehoff to bad.
21:11 toffehoff Looks like it up to you JonathanB to second the minutes
21:11 JonathanB 2nded then
21:12 toffehoff Thanks. If not objections from RichardF, then they are accepted.
21:12 RichardF plenty happy!
21:12 toffehoff What's on the agenda today.
21:12 toffehoff    ?
21:12 toffehoff Could we set some goals for this year?
21:13 toffehoff I think we had one last week.
21:13 toffehoff 1: continue improving our presence on social media
21:14 RichardF pretty much "inspire more people to contribute to and use OSM"
21:14 RichardF the rest is just implementation
21:14 toffehoff Looks like an easy job
21:14 RichardF but of course!
21:15 toffehoff I was actually thinking of something more related to the C of our WG
21:17 toffehoff I was thinking of something like: improving relations with (general) press
21:20 toffehoff ... or should we end this meeting b/c of a raging discussion we cannot keep under control?
21:21 JonathanB Press relations is always going to be tricky for us as a committee because we're not generally available during working hours to act as PRs for OSM
21:21 JonathanB Having been a journalist, there's nothing more annoying than having to chase for information
21:22 toffehoff So, where would you go if you want some info about OSM?
21:23 JonathanB Hacks are always going to try to get hold of Steve if possible, the same way they want to talk to CEOs of corporations, not minions.
21:24 toffehoff So, these are the people to go to: http://blog.osmfoundation.org/contact/
21:24 toffehoff    ?
21:24 JonathanB Probably, since they'd be hard pressed to find a list of email addresses like that anywhere else in the project
21:24 RichardF it wouldn't hurt to have a small, defined list there of press contacts.
21:25 RichardF say, three people for OSMF, one for each of the Local Chapters. when we get some LCs, that is
21:26 toffehoff That would be a start.
21:27 toffehoff From the occational press guy I'm talking to, they most of the time make a comment that it is very hard to find a person behind the project
21:27 JonathanB That's a fair reflection of the nature of the project, though.
21:28 RichardF oh, indeed. but we'd generally like the attention.
21:28 JonathanB but yes, there's should be a more visible way for hacks to ask for stuff
21:28 RichardF I'm happy to be one of the OSMF contacts.
21:28 RichardF given that I spend most of my time at the other side of the equation
21:29 toffehoff Great.
21:32 toffehoff Anything else we could focus on this year?
21:33 JonathanB Multilingualism -- we're far too Anglophone
21:33 toffehoff Could we set some goal for that?
21:34 JonathanB "Have all OSMF communication available in x languages"?
21:34 JonathanB ...and not just EFIGS
21:35 toffehoff So, more than 5
21:35 toffehoff 10?
21:36 JonathanB I don't think the exact number of languages matters so much as the reach
21:36 JonathanB e.g. Spanish reaches more people than just the Spanish
21:36 toffehoff I was trying to fill in the x
21:37 toffehoff Or: which languages are we missing?
21:37 toffehoff (besides EFIGS)
21:37 JonathanB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers
21:37 toffehoff Russian, Japanese, ...
21:38 JonathanB Arabic would be cool.
21:38 toffehoff I like the idea
21:40 toffehoff We could start with at least the official languages of the UN
21:40 toffehoff http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_languages_of_the_United_Nations
21:49 toffehoff So, what are we going to say about multilingualism?
21:50 JonathanB It will help spur the project on in areas we don't reach currently through our established channels.
21:52 toffehoff ... and can we give
21:53 toffehoff ... and can we set the languages we really would like?
21:54 toffehoff english, french, italian, german, spanish, russian, japanese, arabic, chinese?
21:54 toffehoff chinese being mandarine....
21:55 JonathanB Chinese may be unrealistic, but the others are certainly a good target.
21:55 toffehoff Let's set chinese as a nice-to-have.
21:55 toffehoff If you talk about how many people you could reach....
21:56 toffehoff It's getting near the hour.
21:57 JonathanB We appear to have run out of steam...
21:58 toffehoff Maybe next time we could all get ourselves a nice cup of tea
21:58 toffehoff Next week, same time?
21:59 JonathanB Yep
21:59 RichardF worksforme
21:59 toffehoff Can one of you easily grab a copy of this log?
22:01 JonathanB I have one
