OSMF leaflet

Intended use: To encourage people to become a member or to donate; to be used at SOTMs or smaller local events, potentially in a customised version. Explain what the OSMF is, why you should support it, and what options there are. Aimed at potential individual and corporate members alike.

OSMF Membership

Individual persons can choose between the "normal" and "associate" membership. Both cost £15 (€20, $25) per year. The "normal" membership gives you slightly more rights but there's a legal requirement to reveal your residential address to other members; the "associate" membership doesn't have that.

Corporations, small businesses, and other organisations can choose one from five levels of corporate membership:

Supporter (€500 / year)

  • Your name on the OSMF web site
  • Shows your support for the OSM Foundation
  • Attend OSMF General Meetings

Bronze (€1500 / year)

  • All supporter level benefits, plus:
  • First access to SotM sponsorship opportunities
  • Name and logo on OSMF web site

Silver (€4000 / year)

  • All bronze benefits, plus:
  • One joint press release annually

Gold (€10000 / year)

  • All Silver level benefits, plus:
  • A seat on the OSMF advisory board

Platinum (€20000 / year)

  • All Gold level benefits, plus:
  • Invite a board member for an in-house presentation about OpenStreetMap (you pay for travel / lodging)

The OpenStreetMap project

OpenStreetMap is a world-wide collaborative project aiming at providing free map data, under an open license, to anyone who wants it. Volunteers all over the planet contribute their local knowledge and their time to build the best map ever.

OpenStreetMap was started in 2004 in the UK, out of frustration that existing map data was not freely accessible. The idea and project quickly spread across borders and fields of endeavour; today, more than XXX accounts have been created in OSM and more than XXX people contribute regularly to the database.

The data in OpenStreetMap is as diverse as its contributors; it serves motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, seafarers and canoeists alike. Contrary to its name - which derives from its erstwhile government-run competitor, streetmap.co.uk -, OpenStreetMap collects much more than just streets. Building outlines, landcover, waterways, railways and civilisation amenities have their place in the database, down to individual trees, opening times of shops, or even indoor building layouts.

OpenStreetMap is also the cartographic backbone of many humanitarian projects, first popularized by the disaster mapping that followed the Haiti earthquake of 2010. Today, organisations such as the Red Cross, the World Bank, or Doctors without Borders rely on OpenStreetMap and its volunteers for vital development projects.

Sign up for a free account at www.openstreetmap.org now and learn how to add your knowledge to the map. Or, come to one of the events and meetups listed on wiki.openstreetmap.org. If you just want to pass us a quick message about the map, use the (icon) button on the map at www.openstreetmap.org to place a marker and write a message.

Join the OSM Foundation

If you're a private individual, go to join.osmfoundation.org to join the foundation and participate in future elections and decision-making. The membership fee is €20/£15/US$25 per year(*).

If you represent a business or other organisation, consider signing up for one of our corporate membership tiers at https://join.osmfoundation.org/corporate-membership/ and be publicly recognised as a proud supporter of the project!

If membership is not for you, or if you want to give something extra on top of your membership fee, head to donate.openstreetmap.org where we will thankfully process your donation. We run a widely publicised donation drive once a year, but we do accept donations throughout the year.

Free and Open

OpenStreetMap data is distributed under the Open Database License v1.0 (link). This license allows everyone to use and re-distribute OSM data for any purpose, including commercial use. The license mandates that attribution must be given (i.e. when you build something based on OSM and publish it, you must make sure the recipient is made aware that the data comes from OSM). The license is also a "share-alike" license which means that data products derived from OpenStreetMap have to be published under that same license. This ensures that nobody can take the OSM data and claim it for themselves.

Working Groups

Apart from the board of directors, the OSM Foundation has a number of working groups dealing with particular aspects of OSMF work, for example Operations (runs the servers), License (trademarks and license issues), Membership, Communications, and Data (helps resolve conflicts among contributors). Local Chapters

The OSM Foundation is associated with local chapters in many countries. These groups are independent legal entities pursuing the same goals as the OSMF in a particular country or region.

The OpenStreetMap Foundation

The OSMF was incorporated in 2006 when it had become clear that the project was much more than a private individual's hobby. A proper legal entity was required to take stewardship of domain names and trade marks, to take legal responsibility and to ensure that the project's server operations had a solid financial basis.

The Foundation's role is not to direct or control the project, but to provide the support the project needs to flourish. The OSMF has a board of seven volunteer directors and no full-time staff. It is financed entirely through donations and membership fees.

The Foundation's main responsibilities are

  • ensuring that the technical infrastructure keeps up with the demands of a growing project;
  • safeguarding the project's domains, trademarks, and license;
  • running the yearly State of the Map conference; and
  • helping to make the project a welcoming place for a large and diverse crowd.

Suggested changes to text organisation

these have been implemented on the Current proposed layout (2 sections below)

  • The sections have been re-organised in 2 large groups, the OSM project (inner pages 2, 3) and the OSM Foundation (pages 5 and 6).
  • The text for "inner page 1/4" on the wiki, had 3 subheadings added (#1 Local Knowledge - Community driven #2 Diverse data #3 Humanitarian links), in order to aid readability.
  • A small section "OSM-based services" has been added.

  • Globe view change to something more neutral, one of the poles maybe? Or removal.
