Statistics
654 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (188 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 969 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1060 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
118 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 28 were discarded as spam. 463 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 155 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 6 hours.
13 DWG members were active in the quarter (86% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (505), but we also used the languages German (33), Spanish (21), Russian (19), Danish (8), French (7), Polish (6), Italian (6), and Dutch (6). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
User conflicts
This quarter there were a lot of DWG tickets that were basically about user conflicts. A couple were international or national disputes, but most should have been minor ("mapper X thinks tag A is appropriate but mapper Y thinks tag B"). In just one example, the 53rd(!) piece of correspondence in a dispute was entirely in capital letters - at that point someone (and probably several people) need to take a break. Sometimes both sides are being unreasonable. Our advice, if communication isn't occurring, is for each party to say what they believe to be a problem and why, and if no bargaining or discussion take it to the forum so that more people can be involved. In cases were one person is being reasonable and the other not, often we'll find that it is the unreasonable one that raises an issue or mails the DWG.
Former railway mapping
Another "both sides are being unreasonable" example was in the mapping of (and deletion of) railways in the USA. In some cases there was literally nothing left (in one example an industrial area had been built where a railway was 50 years ago) and in another a former railway grade had clearly been reused as a pedestrian and cycle path, but the "other side" of the dispute had removed all tags, rather than adding ones that might have been appropriate to the cycle path.
